Frequently Asked Questions
Who is leading Raglan Water Sport Camp ?
Ozone New Zealand, and Raglan Kayak and Paddleboard have teamed up to bring a diverse activity set to this camp. The daily instructors are Alina Karam and Valerie Lubrick, both longtime Raglan residents and experienced instructors in a variety of activities.
What is the camp format?
On a day-to-day basis the activity schedule will be based around wind and tide to make the most of the summer elements. As well, the team is limited to two instructors and only six participants per week, and as such the program is tailored to the campers experience, energy, and passion. Everyone will meet at 8am at the Bow Street jetty, across from Orca eatery and bar, and organize themselves for the day which may include safety briefings, getting to know each other and the gear, lessons about tide and the wind. At times the group may further be broken up into smaller teams to best facilitate learning and use of the jetski and other equipment. The team will stop for snacks, water and lunch, so please bring lots and water and food as we may not be near shops to purchase items. The program will finish back at the bow street jetty at 2pm.
Tell us more about the activities.
This is a water sport adventure camp unlike any other. We aim to provide each participant with a positive experience that includes managing themselves and their safety with regards to person, equipment and environment. The objective is to try new things, or expand current skills in a supportive environment. We hope that campers will enthusiastically partake in all the activities. We anticipate offering a chance to experience a variety of pursuits so campers have a good feel for what is on offer in Raglan. Who knows, your child may find a new passion! Alina started her passion for kitesurfing in Mexico at age 13!
Hydrofoil and Twintip lessons
The Hydrofoil and Twintip lessons will be taught behind a NZ Maritime Audited jetski. Campers will learn how to chose gear, manage their safety as well as checking each other’s safety and being a confident spotter. All jet ski activities will take place inside the Raglan harbour. Raglan Water Sport Camp will have use of the jet ski each day of camp, instruction and all specialized equipment (helmets, foil boards, tow lines etc) will be provided.
Fly Trainer Kites, introduction for kiteboarding (wind dependent).
If wind is in the forecast the instructors will break out the trainer kites and give each camper a chance to be in command on the sand. This is the first step in learning to kitesurf and along with the twintip lesson will provide a solid basis from which to jump in to the sport, or just provide an opportunity to try something new and challenge themselves.
Kayak and SUP adventures
When the tide is right and the wind has dropped we anticipate using kayaks and SUPs for touring and fun. Instruction will be given appropriate to the skill level of the participants, no experience is necessary, just a bit of energy and enthusiasm.
Can campers bring cameras/phones/electronics?
We ask that all electronics and valuables be left at home. This allows team members to be fully engaged in the present moment and there is less chance of water damage and loss. The instructors will take photos and videos throughout the week and make these available to camper afterwards. Staff will be contactable via cell phone throughout the sessions.
